Parishioners Arrange Public Meeting to React to Deacon Plans

A group of disenfranchised members of the Diocese of Killaloe is organising a public meeting in reaction to plans for male only Deacons in this region.

It follows a growing number of complaints about the initiative to members of the Clergy and Clare FM.

The news comes as the spokesperson for the Diocese has moved to clarify the rules surronding the plans and has acknowledged the hurt that's been caused as a result.

Bishop Kieran O'Reilly issued a pastoral letter in recent weeks outlining plans for deacons to be included in the ministry here.

It will see men preside over weddings, funerals and other religious events following a four-year training program which is not open to women.

Speaking on Clare FM's Morning Focus Spokesperson for the diocese Fr Brendan Quinlivan says the rule is one handed down by the Universal Church – he says the body locally has been surprised by the level of upset caused by the initiative.

He says the recenlty held listening process is being followed up on.

An open forum is being arranged by a number of people upset by the plans.

Kathleen McDonnell Chairperson of Cross Pastoral Council is one of those involved – she outlines why they've organised the meeting.

Fr Brendan has moved to clarify the Diocese' position on women's involvement in the church locally.

He says the Bioship is looking at a range of options.

The open forum will take place at the Inn at Dromoland on Monday the 15th of September at 8pm.

Fr Quinlivan says the Bishop will attend, if he's available.

However speaking with Clare FM's John Cooke on Morning Focus earlier Kathleen says she doesn't expect to see him there.
