Passenger Jet Diverts To Shannon After Crew Declare Emergency

A passenger jet diverted to Shannon Airport in the early hours of this morning after crew declared an emergency.

American Airlines flight AA-141 departed London Heathrow at 7.40 last night bound for JFK airport in New York, but three hours into its journey, crew opted to turn around after receiving an indicator light in the cockpit.

Authorities at Shannon implemented the airport's emergency plan and three units from the local Fire Service were dispatched to the airport, while two more units from Ennis were sent to a holding point on the M18 motorway at Dromoland.

The flight landed safely at 12.26am and was met by almost a dozen emergency vehicles, including ambulances from Ennis and Limerick.

There were 89 passengers and crew on board the Boeing 777-200 jet and American Airlines say they're working to get the passengers to their destination as soon as possible.
