Passenger Numbers Up At Shannon Airport

Shannon's CEO says "everything must be done" to preserve the Airport's link with Heathrow.

Access to Europe's busiest airport is seen as key for Shannon and for the local economy, and this is currently provided by Aer Lingus.

However, the former flag carrier has been the subject of two bids by IAG, and local government representatives have called for Shannon to be protected in the event of any sale.

Neil Pakey says the consequences of a previous withdrawal of the Heathrow slots in 2007 shows how essential they are.

He was speaking as the Airport announced that there was a 17% increase in passenger numbers last year, with an extra 239,000 people using Shannon.
