Passengers Overnight In Shannon After Fruit Causes Jet Diversion

A consignment of fruit is reported to have caused a transatlantic jet with nearly 200 people on board to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport yesterday.

The Aeromexico jet was travelling from Mexico City to Paris when it diverted to Shannon because of indications of a fire on-board.

An emergency plan was activated, but this was stood down last evening, and reports say that heat from a large consigned of mangos on board the plane caused the sensors to activate – there were a number of similar incidents at the Airport last year.

The 192 passengers and crew on board stayed in the Shannon area overnight, and are due to be flown to Paris on a relief plane this afternoon.

Separately, a total of three Ryanair and Aer Lingus flights were diverted from Cork to Shannon last night because of fog.
