Pay Cut For Clare’s New Councillors

The new mayor of Clare is facing a €7,000 pay-cut, while top-up payments to members of the County Council are also being slashed.

Clare's 28 new councillors will be paid €16,724 per annum, the same figure received by their predecessors.

Previous County Mayors were paid an extra €27,000 per year, but that's to be cut to €20,000 for the new mayor who'll be announced on Friday, while the Deputy Mayor's pay is also being cut from €9,000 euro to a maximum of €4,000.

Town Councils are gone, but the Chair of the new Ennis Municipal Authority will receive €12,000 per annum, with €6,000 on offer for the chairpersons of the Shannon, West Clare and Killaloe Districts.

Expenses for attending meetings will continue to be based on the distance each councillor lives from the Council Headquarters, but the previous €4,700 yearly allowance for conferences is being slashed to just 700 euro with additional payments available for approved training sessions.

Following the local elections, negotiations are still ongoing between Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and a Technical group of Councillors to decide who'll wear the mayoral chains and lead various committees for the coming five years.

But whoever gets to share the spoils will have less to divide under a new regime of council expenses announced by government.
