The latest data from the Central Statistics Office relates to 2019, when 18,872 penalty points were dished out to drivers in Clare.

It’s a fall of 3.8 percent on the 19,618 penalty points handed out by the authorities back in 2018 in this county.

Only four counties – Kilkenny, Tipperary, Monaghan and Meath – saw higher percentage drops in the same timeframe.

Of the 5,237 penalty point enforcement notices issued here in 2019, 60 percent of them were given to male drivers, which is above the national average of 56 percent.

By far the most common reason for penalty points issued to motorists here was speeding, which was cited in 70 percent of cases.

15,000 drivers in total here have at least one penalty point, with 19 of those passing the 12 point threshold in 2019 and therefore being disqualified from driving for six months.
