Planning Begins for 2016 Ennis Fleadh

The countdown is already underway to August 2016, and the staging of Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Ennis.

The event is returning to Clare for the first time in nearly forty years, delivering a massive economic boost to the town and county.

2016 will mark only the third time that Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann will have come to Clare and to Ennis, after it was previously held here in 1977 and in 1956, when it was famously documented in song by Robbie McMahon.

The planning of next year's event is already underway, with the first of many meetings held early this morning.

The scale of the Fleadh is huge, with up to 400,000 people expected to gather from across Ireland and beyond.

Mayor of Ennis Councillor Johnny Flynn believes it will be a landmark event

A study carried out on the Fleadh of 2013, which was held in Derry, found that it generated forty million pounds sterling for the local economy.

That works out at around forty million euro, and local business groups and hotelliers are delighted that it's coming this way.

Clare County Council CEO Tom Coughlan thinks it's good news for communities throughout Clare, and not just Ennis.

This year's Fleadh in Sligo is their second, as has been the tradition over recent years, so while it has been forty years since the event was held here, it's hoped that the next wait will be just twelve months.

Head of Comhaltas Ceolteoirí Eireann Labhras O'Murchu expects Ennis to be in with a very good chance of hosting the 2017 Fleadh too.
