Plans For Canopy Over Historic Ennis Street Shelved

Proposals to put a canopy over one of Ennis’s most historic streets have been shelved.

The first phase of regeneration works for Parnell street, and up to 28 local laneways, got the green light from the local authority this week, but they won’t now include a suggested perspex roof.

As part on an ongoing consultation process, traders voted down the proposal on the grounds that the roof would be too difficult to clean and maintain.

It comes as the council prepare to put out a tender for a range of other improvement works in the area, which are likely to get underway towards the end of the year and will be carried out on a phased basis.

Secretary of the Parnell Street Trader’s Association, Noreen Twomey Walsh says those working in the area are more concerned about the state of the street at ground level.
