Plans For Trump’s Doonbeg Coastal Protection Works Hit Stumbling Block

Plans for Donald Trump's controversial coastal protection works in Doonbeg have hit a stumbling block.

In a submission to Clare County Council, the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaelteacht has deemed that consultants haven't proven that a ten million euro rock armour barrier is necessary to protect the golf course.

The Government Department, which is charged with protecting Ireland's EU-designated Special Areas of Conservation sites, is the latest to weigh in on the controversial planned coastal protection works in Doonbeg.

Plans for the 2.8 kilometre wall of rock armour have been given a broad welcome in the west Clare village, with many locals citing the need for protection against flooding, while highlighting the economic benefits of the Hotel and Golf Resort.

But a number of groups have raised objections against the plans, amdist concerns over the environmental impact.

In a ten-page submission, the Department said the key concern is "the likely effect of the proposed development on the dunes…in the long term".

The Department says claims that a "do nothing" approach would have a negative affect on the conservation status of the SAC are contrary to the conservation objectives for the SAC.

It's also raised questions over the validity of the company's claims on future erosion.

Clare County Council is due to make a decision on the application next month.
