Controversial proposals to pump thousands of gallons of water from Lough Derg to supply householders in Dublin are set to be outlined to Clare councillors today.
Under the plan Dublin City Council is seeking to abstract around 2 percent of water from the Shannon at times of high flow, pipe it to an eco-park style reservoir in the Midlands and it would then supply households in the greater Dublin area, Westmeath, Offaly, Meath, Wicklow and Kildare.
Originally the proposal was to take the water from Lough Ree but following a high profile campaign against the proposal headed up by Fianna Fail TD Mary O Rourke, this was abandoned.
RPS consultants who are involved in the project will address members of the Strategic Policy Committee on the Environment this afternoon and while there are concerns over the proposal, chairman Joe Arkins says he’ll keep an open mind until all the facts are heard
