Plans to take water from Shannon for Dublin households steps up a gear

Controversial plans to take thousands of gallons of water from Lough Derg to serve households in the Greater Dublin area will be stepped up next month.

Dublin City Council is set to lodge planning permission for a 1,400 acre reservoir in the Midlands which will store the back up supplies once its pumped from The River Shannon.

However there’s deep concern here that if  project goes ahead it will adversely affect tourism and other water related activities in East Clare.

Late last year members of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Environment travelled to Terryglass to see the proposed extraction point up from Mountshannon and are currently preparing a report for the Environment Minister.

Committee member and Clare Fianna Fail TD Timmy Dooley believes the local authority in Dublin is jumping the gun
