A Fine Gael Senator insists a directly elected mayor for Limerick will benefit the entire region, including Clare, and help drive economic activity here.
Only the people of Limerick have backed plans for a directly elected Mayor in their city – the plan was rejected in Cork and Waterford.
Although the votes aren’t binding, it was announced in advance of polling day that the Housing Minister would submit a report to the Oireachtas with the proposal for any area in which it was accepted.
