The Diocese of Killaloe could be amalgamated with several others as part of behind the scenes discussion on the future of the Irish Catholic Church.
Its one of 11 diocese being looked at with reports today suggesting Kilalloe could be merged with Limerick and Cashel and Emly with the archbishop residing in Limerick.
There are currently 26 dioceses in Ireland with general agreement in the church that this is far too many with 4.5 million Catholics here- compared to 4.3 million in LA which had just one archbishop and six auxiliary bishops
