A post mortem examination is taking place this afternoon on the body of a young man who fell from the Cliffs of Moher, while taking a selfie photograph.

The alarm was raised at around 3.15 yesterday afternoon and the Doolin unit of the Irish Coastguard and the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115 were dispatched to the scene.

A helicopter winchman was lowered to the water and recovered the casualty and the body was flown to the Doolin Coastguard Station.

There, the victim was formally pronounced dead, and the body was removed to University Hospital Limerick for formal identification and post-mortem examination.

Gardaí interviewed a number of eye-witnesses following incident and have confirmed that, at this stage, they are treating it as a tragic accident.

Initial indications are that the victim, who is believed to be an Indian national, studying at University in Dublin, was taking a selfie and lost his footing.

Gardaí have been in contact with the Indian Embassy as part of efforts to inform the victim’s family and to arrange repatriation.
