President acknowledges troubling Christmas for many

President Michael D Higgins has praised Ireland’s resilience and expressed his hopes for the future of this country in his first Christmas address from Aras an Uachtaran.

However, the Newmarket-on-Fergus native also admits that many Irish families face struggles this festive season.

President Higgins says he is conscious that unemployment, financial insecurity or the absence of a loved one will cast a dark shadow over many homes this Christmas.

However, the Newmarket-on-Fergus native also insists that Irish people have the resilience and wisdom to move beyond cynicism and craft a new positive form of Irishness.

In an attempt to focus on the positives this Christmas, President Higgins points to the stronger aspects of our economy, including growth in exports, while he also praises our cultural and sporting achievements.

Stating that Ireland is moving forward with a common purpose, the President sends his best wishes for Christmas and the New Year to everyone here in Ireland and to our extended global family across the world.
