President Michael D. Higgins was among the mourners for the funeral of Josie O’Donoghue in Fanore yesterday- mother of the late poet and former priest John O’ Donoghue.
The Newmarket on Fergus man was a friend of Dr O’Donohue and 53 year old’s poem Beannacht – written for Josie O Donoghue, was performed at the presidential inauguration last November.
Dr O’Donohue died in France four years ago today at the age of 53 – His mother Josie died peacefully on New Year’s Eve at her home near Ballyvaughan.
The new president was also in Kinvara last evening to attend the removal service for the late Katie Whelan, mother of Attorney General Maire Whelan.
Mrs Whelan passed away peacefully on New Years Day – her attorney general daughter is a friend and former student of President Michael D Higgins.
