The day's first event in Liege will also be attended by the presidents of France and Germany, and members of the British and Belgian royal families.

Later, the President and Mrs Higgins will attend a service in Mons, where the first Irish soldiers killed in the conflict are buried.

Almost 50 thousand Irish soldiers died in the conflict between 1914 and 1918.
