President Michael D Higgins is set to join with Muhammad Ali in becoming a freeman of Ennis.
Following his election last year, Ennis Town Council invited President Higgins to the county town to accept the award – the Office of the Secretary General to the President has now confirmed that he has agreed in principal to the honour.

It’s expected that a function will be held next February.
President Higgins spent much of his childhood at Ballycar near Newmarket on Fergus and was awarded a civic reception in his honour by Clare County Council, which took place in June.
