Five presidential hopefuls have been invited to make their case to the county’s councillors today
David Norris, Sean Gallagher, Mary Davis, Pat Jones and Ennis man Dermot Mulqueen need the backing of four local authorities or twenty oireachtas members in order to contest the upcoming election proper.
They will outline their individual manifestos before Clare’s local representatives in Aras Contae an Chlair at quarter past two this afternoon, after which councillors will then have the opportunity to endorse any of the presidental hopefuls.
Meanwhile, Michael D Higgins says there are limitations to the office of the President, but tackling Ireland’s reputation is an achievable feat.
The former TD, who spent much of his childhood in County Clare, will run for the President after securing the Labour party nomination yesterday.
