Progress for Quilty Coastal Protection Plans

Coastal Protection works to save 15 houses from further storm damage near Quilty may have moved a step closer.

During a special meeting of Clare County Council this afternoon, the Office of Public Works made contact to indicate they will consider an application for one million euro in funding for a feasibility study to carry out such works at Clohaninchy.

The meeting heard concerns and frustrations from several councillors who hit out at "government inaction" on storm damage funding for other areas including Kilkee, the Flaggy Shore and Clahane, Liscannor.

But Council Chief Tom Coughlan said today's contact from the OPW does appear to be progress for those in the Quilty area.

The appllication will be made under the OPW's Minor Works and Coastal Protections Scheme, and Mr. Coughlan said the council had previously been told that such funds would only be used to repair existing coastal defences and not for new works.

The Council CEO explained that adequate coastal protections works at Clohaninchy will require a number of studies as well as a total spend of around 5 million euro and will take some years to complete.

He's waiting to see the OPW's full terms and conditions for the feasibility study before commenting further.
