Property Tax Cut to be Debated at Clare County Council

Clare's Sinn Féin Councillor says he expects a Fianna Fáil motion, calling for a 15% reduction of the property tax, to be passed by the County Council this afternoon.

That's despite suggestions that the money could be better used for job creation measures and that calls for the cut are politically motivated.

It's expected that Clare County Councillors will discuss the issue of the property tax at this afternoon's meeting, amid an expectation that the charge here will be cut.

The government has already given the green light for the 15% reduction, and two Fianna Fáil Councillors – Tom McNamara of Kilmaley and Ennistymon's Richard Nagle, have submitted motions calling for this to happen.

Councillor Nagle accepts more information is needed, but feels this is a chance to bolster peoples' income.

Fianna Fáil has 12 of the 28 seats on the Clare County Council, but another local representative says he expects it to pass.

Sinn Féin's Mike McKee has already expressed his view that the charge should be reduced this year, and eventually abolished.

However, another Councillor is raising concern about suggestions that the money should be given away.

Ennis Mayor Johnny Flynn says the 15% reduction would be worth an average of 30 euro per household, and potentially even less in some cases.

He thinks the total amount of around 1.5 million euro could perhaps be better used if invested into job creation measures.

He's also accused Fianna Fáil of buying support ahead of the next General Election.
