Public safety issues uncovered at 7 unfinished Clare housing estates

Serious public safety issues have been uncovered at 7 unfinished housing estates in parts of South East Clare and Shannon.

The survey carried out by Clare County Council also found that efforts to contact the developer or site owners or seek compliance from them, were unsuccessful.

Following the publication of a major report into the level of ghost estates across the country, The Environment Department instructed each local authority to carry out a detailed assessment of unfinished housing developments.

The aim was to establish the number of estates where there’s no activity, where efforts to contact the developer or site owner have been unsuccessful and where serious public safety issues are present.

In correspondence seen by Clare FM, seven such estates have now been identified by Clare County Council under the criteria laid out by the department , and they are

Dun Rí, Bunratty,

Cluain Aoibheann in Shannon,

Phase 2 of Gleann Cora in Newmarket  on  Fergus,

Chuirt an Droichead, Sixmilebridge,

Carrig Midhe, Corbally,

Manor Grove, Ardnacrusha,

and

Bruachlan / Ghrianán, and storm water network (in the  McInerney part of the development) in Westbury,

The acting director of services for Planning in Clare County Council says the local authority doesn’t have the funds available to address the remedial works required and has impressed upon the Environment Department the necessity for adequate resources to be made available.
