Relief At Boundary Decision

Clare representatives have expressed their relief that the county boundary will not be touched as part of new governing arrangements in Limerick.

Environment Minister Phil Hogan has confirmed that despite recommendations to the contrary, Shannon Banks, Westbury and the North Campus at UL, will not be transferred under the control of a new single authority for all of Limerick, which will be created after the local elections in 2014.

The government says the moves will boost local economic activity and create potential savings of over 15 million euro for the taxpayer – Labour TD Michael McNamara is confident that Clare will benefit directly from the move, while Fine Gael Senator Tony Mulcahy, a former Mayor of Clare, is confident that the announcement now draws a line under the fears of residents concerned.
