Religious Groups Defend Payouts To Child Abuse Survivors

Religious groups including the Christian Brothers and Sisters of mercy have defended their payouts to child abuse survivors.

It follows reports that just 13 percent of compensation has been received – despite promises to split the cost 50-50 with the State.

The Christian Brothers say they’re on course to fulfilling their voluntary pledge with 24 million Euro paid already and another ten million on the way.

Initial estimates placed the cost of the redress scheme at 250-million euro, but the final bill is over €1.5 billion.
