If the leaks published in today’s independent are accurate families will have to brace themselves for some harsh cuts next week.

The papers report claims child benefit will be slashed by 10 euro in the budget – while prescription charges for those on medical cards will be doubled to 1 euro.

The old age pension won’t be reduced, but the government is considering reducing grants for phone, electricity, and television services for the elderly.

The finance minister said yesterday that the budget would be tough but fair – and said there’s less fear of the budget because of fewer media leaks this year.
