Revelations Into Corruption Damaging For Politics

A Cabinet minister says the revelations into corruption among county councillors are extremely damaging for politics.

Minister Simon Coveney said watching the RTE investigates programme was like watching an episode of Killinaskully.

The programme showed a number of councillors willing to take bribes in exchange for securing planning permission for wind farms.

Minister Coveney says he thought the corruption revealed was a thing of the past.

Here, meanwhile, a Clare County Councillor says he's embarrassed to be associated with last night's programme.

Former Mayor of Ennis, Councillor Johnny Flynn, was found to have not registered his investment in a retirement complex at Castletroy in Co Limerick.

The Fine Gael Councillor says he made the investment ten years ago to provide for his children’s future education, but that this money was subsequently lost and that the property rights are now controlled by NAMA.

He insists the investment in the scheme held no connection with his elected position and he says the kind of behviour sen in last night's programme is totally unacceptable.
