A man rescued from a boat off Lough Derg is in a critical condition in hospital.
The alarm was raised shortly after half eleven last night after reports that a boat with one person on board had run aground at Tinkers Point on the southern tip of IIaunmore, an island in Lough Derg.
The RNLI lifeboat was launched and the crew discovered a man in the helm’s seat of the boat who was deeply unconscious and appeared severely hypothermic. No body else was found on the boat.
The three RNLI crew members then boarded the vessel and transferred the unconscious man to the lifeboat and administered first aid and oxygen before returning to shore at Dromineer where a waiting ambulance brought him to Limerick Regional Hospital.
The lifeboat members then returned to the stricken vessel to search for documentation to identify the man and also walked the island shoreline to out rule the possibility that another person might have gone onshore .
They then towed the man’s boat back to Dromineer.
