The road remains closed while a technical examination is carried out – and Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

It comes just 24 hours after a woman in her 70’s and a man in his twenties were killed in separate crashes in Wexford and Cavan

Meanwhile,

Families heading home after the Christmas Break in the county are being urged to ensure they are well rested before the trip and their vehicles are in a roadworthy condition.

While, the county has escaped the sub zero temperatures of last year, many routes around Clare remain slippery due to the heavy showers in recent days.

Gardai say this can lead to treacherous conditions but Sergeant Joe Downey of Ennis Garda Station says  the risks are reduced if motorists ensure their vehicles are in good working order.
