From today, it's free to phone the Samaritans on 116 123.
The new number is being introduced as part of the European Commission's plan to reserve all numbers beginning with 116 for services of social value.

Samaritans has been assigned as the "emotional support helpline" by comreg, as it's the only organisation in Ireland already meeting and exceeding European Commission Standards.
The new number has already been trialled in a number of areas, including Clare.
