A child must be aged between four and six to begin school – it’s at the parents discretion to decide when they should start.

Under new proposals, from Department of Education officials, the age would be set at five.

It has the potential to generate savings of 3.5 million euro in the first year and rising as the years go on.

There’s 11 other cost-cutting measures being put forward for consideration including scrapping transition year.

A 3-thousand euro flat-rate college registration fee is also being looked as well as further reductions in grants and scholarships.
