Schools urged to consider extending Christmas Break over icy roads

 

Clare County Council and local Gardaí are asking schools to consider extending the Christmas break due to the freezing weather.

With sub zero temperatures expected to last up until the weekend at least and road conditions in a continually hazardous state school boards of management are being advised to consider whether it’s safe to go ahead with the planned return to school tomorrow.

The Department of Education has said it’s a matter for each school in Clare to decide but says boards of management should consider such issues as access and safety.

Clare County Council’s Senior Roads Engineer Tom Tiernan says the local authority and Gardaí are anxious to keep traffic volumes to a minimum as the cold snap continues
