The Boeing 767-400 jet was overhead Co Mayo when the crew opted not to continue with their oceanic crossing.

The pilot contacted air traffic controllers at Shannon and advised them of a ‘maintenance issue’ they wished to have investigated before they continued across the Atlantic.

Airport emergency crews were standing by for the jet when it landed. Engineers are now investigating the issue.

Earlier, a Virgin Atlantic jet diverted after a passenger on board was reported to have fallen ill.

Flight VS-116 from Atlanta to London landed at 8.30am and a male passenger was removed to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

The flight continued its journey to Heathrow shortly before 10.00am.
