Senators return early from summer recess

Senators will return from the summer recess early today to debate whether or not to overturn Ireland’s laws to regulate the process of organ donation.

Fianna Fáil senator Mark Daly successfully gathered signatures from 20 members of the Seanad to hold the emergency debate.

He wants the Seanad to overturn an order from the Minister for Health which governs the countries system for organ donation.

However, Fine Gael says today’s sitting is redundant – because a ministerial order can only be overturned if both the Dáil and Seanad agree to it.
