“Serious Concern” Over Drop In Shannon Passenger Numbers

Serious concern has been raised over a drop in passenger numbers at Shannon Airport.

New CSO figures show just under 1.6 million people travelled through the Midwest facility last year, a 4.5% drop on 2015 figures.

It was the only Irish Airport to experience reduced numbers, with Dublin seeing 6% growth and Kerry and Cork witnessing a rise of 3 and 3.4% respectively.

The figures don’t include transit business though, which accounts for 9% of the airport’s passenger numbers, and a spokesperson has told Clare FM that there has been 5% growth in the first quarter of this year.

Former Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District, Councillor PJ Ryan has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that Shannon has been under performing in recent years, saying it’s time the Transport Minister responded.
