Shannon Airport has called for strike action involving some of it's staff to be withdrawn.
SIPTU members at Shannon, as well as at Dublin and Cork Airports and Aer Lingus, remain committed to plans for a four-hour work stoppage for next Friday.
Workers at the state airports and the former flag carrier plan a four-hour strike from 5 a.m. next Friday morning, March 14th.
However, in a statement to Clare FM this lunchtime, a spokesperson for Shannon Airport has said that if the action is not withdrawn quickly, then it will divert visitors away from Ireland…. on the weekend that kick-starts the annual tourist season here, and across the country.
The statement also claims that those who have independently booked hotels and visits face the prospect of not being able to get here, and that such visitors are crucial to all in Ireland, and satisfying them should be a top priority.
The dispute centres on a 780 million euro defecit in the workers' pension scheme, but the Transport Minister has said SIPTU is wrong to go ahead with the action.
The union is engaging with an expert panel appointed to look at the scheme, but remains committed to industrial action.
