Shannon Group is to answer questions from TDs about the impact of COVID-19 on its operations and on the aviation industry.
Representatives from Shannon and Dublin Airports, as well as Aer Lingus and Ryanair, are to be invited to appear before the Dáil’s Oireachtas Committee on the disease in two weeks time, on foot of an invitation from committee Chair and Clare Independent TD Michael McNamara.
Shannon has experienced a 96% drop in traffic since the onset of the pandemic, and while Ryanair has resumed some services, traffic levels at Irish airports aren’t expected to return to pre-pandemic levels for another three years.
Management at Shannon last week announced pay cuts, temporary lay-offs and a voluntary severance scheme as part of efforts to secure the future of the Airport.
While, Ryanair signalled that it would scale back its Shannon services when it announced the cancelling of flights between Ireland and the UK in August and September.
