Plans for a proposed 60 million euro retail park and the creation of over 600 jobs in Shannon are no longer viable after part of the project was refused planning.
Clare County Council gave the go ahead for four retail warehouse units, a discount store, a motor showroom, a business centre and a medical centre at Smithstown but refused permission for a number of other shops.
Greenband Developments and Sean Halpin, who are behind the project, now say the project is not viable.
In its decision, Clare County Council granted planning permission for the retail warehouse units along with a discount store, a motor showroom, a business centre and a medical centre
However, plans for the Neighbourhood Centre which was to house a convenience shop, hairdressers, bookmakers, pharmacy and a discount food store were denied.
The local authority said that it would have a adverse impact on the vitality of Shannon Town and would contravene the Department of the Environment retail guidelines.
Sean Halpin, who’s behind the proposed development says that he’s extremely disappointed with the decision and says the entire project, is now not viable due to the refusal of permission for the centre
Mr Halpin says they will now examine their options and most likely appeal the decision to An Bord Pleanala
The development, was due to have created over 600 jobs during construction and once it was up and running.
