Shannon's Fine Gael Senator, who witnessed domestic violence in his own home whilst growing up, is hopeful that new laws will lead to stronger punishments for offenders.
It's expected that the Bill, which has been published by Minister Frances Fitzgerald, will be debated and voted on by TDs and Senators after the Oireachtas returns from its summer break.

It includes proposals which aim to make the courts process easier for a complainant and at barring an offender from communicating electronically with their victim.
Senator Tony Mulcahy hopes it will help curb what he feels is a widespread problem.
