A Clare Fine Gael Senator has described his father as a "thug and a bully" during a speech on domestic violence.
At a meeting of the Oireachtas Justice Committee yesterday, Shannon representative Tony Mulcahy called for greater powers to be given to Gardaí who are called to homes where an incident of domestic violence occurred.

He also said little has changed from when he was a child, and witnessed violence in his own home and eventually put his father out of the family home.
