Significant Centenary Event Brings East and West Clare Memorial Committees Together

Memorial committees in East and West Clare have come together this week to mark the 100th anniversary of one of the IRA’s most amibitious actions taken during the War of Independence.

The night of Friday April 22nd, 1921 saw the Battle of Coolmeen, with East Clare men travelling 45 miles to attack British forces in the heavily garrisoned town of Kilrush.

Members of the East Clare Memorial Committee travelled to meet with their West Clare colleagues in Kildysart in a symbolic gesture to mark the centenary earlier this week.
