Speeding Cleric Apologised To Garda

A judge has overturned the driving ban handed down to a speeding Clare cleric.

Canon Bob Hanna had been handed a six-month driving ban, after he was caught driving at 135 kilometres per hour in a 100k zone on the N18 at Bunratty on April 17th last.

At Ennis Circuit Court yesterday, state solicitor Martin Linnane said the Church of Ireland rector was "abusive and aggressive" in his behaviour towards Garda Lisa McDonagh when he was stopped.

Counsel for Canon Hanna said he accepted that the language he used was "unacceptable" and the court heard that he has already submitted a letter of apology.

Judge Tom O'Donnell said he was satisfied to remove the driving ban, and reduced a 500 euro fine to 250 euro, though he told Canon Hanna that "even God" would tell him to slow down on that particular road.
