A proposal for the state to purchase the childhood home of writer Edna O'Brien appears to be falling between two departmental stools.

Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara has asked the newly appointed Arts Minister to consider buying Drewsborough House  in Tuamgraney as it is currently on the market.

The proposal has been welcomed in the locality.

In statements to Clare FM the department of Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht says neither the Minister or her department has a remit which would allow for the purchase of the property.

It's passed on the idea to the Office of Public Works.

However in a separate statement to Clare FM the OPW says its a matter for the department of the Arts in the first instance as the capital funds for such purposes are held there.

Sepately Minister Heather Humphries is understood to have received the request and is said to be considering it.
