State to oppose any bail attempt by Joe O’Reilly

Lawyers for the State say there will be significant opposition to any bail application by convicted murderer Joe O’Reilly.

The 39 year old is serving life for killing his wife Rachel at their home in Naul, Co Dublin in October 2004.

He’s appeared in court as part of his miscarriage of justice bid.

Joe O’Reilly maintains he’s innocent of his wife Rachel’s murder .

In 2009 he lost an appeal against his conviction which he’s now hoping to overturn by having it declared a miscarriage of justice.

But the Court of Criminal Appeal has concerns the case has been left hanging since papers were lodged last July.

Under order the 39 year old was brought from Portlaoise prison to court to explain what is happening.

He appeared in a dark suit and tie and confirmed that last week he hired solicitor Frank Buttimer to represent him and that he intends to apply for bail.

Lawyers for the State say there will be significant opposition to bail for a number of reasons.
