Stobart Air Announces Withdrawal From Shannon

Stobart Air is to close its base and withdraw all flights from Shannon Airport, effective from the New Year.

The company has operated 20 flights a week between Shannon and Britain, as Aer Lingus Regional, but now their 26 Clare-based staff are to be offered redeployment.

Earlier this month, Stobart Air confirmed that it was reviewing its operations at Shannon Airport.

At that time, it was understood workers had been offered the chance to re-locate to Dublin, or accept redundancy.

Now, the airline has confirmed that it will shut its Shannon base, and that its flights to Bristol, Birmingham and Edinburgh will all cease from January 5th next year.

Passengers who had booked flights after this date will be offered seats on another one of the company's services, or a full refund.

Under the Aer Lingus Regional banner, Stobart had also flown to Manchester up until the end of October and the services saw over 125,000 passengers pass through Shannon in the first ten months of this year.

In a statement to Clare FM, Stobart has described its decision as "regrettable" but says "Shannon does not fit" with their "current strategic plan."

Shannon Airport says the decision is outside of its control, and insists that the routes which are being cancelled have delivered strong passenger numbers.

The Airport is already in talks to secure replacement carriers.
