Study Finds Structural Damage In Clare Churches

Increasing rainfall coupled with the spread of ivy is causing immense structural damage to Clare’s medieval churches.

It’s the one of the findings of a comprehensive new survey on 170 such structures across the county.

The report ‘A Medieval Church Survey for County Clare’, which is funded jointly by the Heritage Council and Clare County Council, found a third of them have disappeared while a another third are dilapidated and at risk of crumbling apart.

Approximately 55 churches were found to be in good structural condition, due mainly to ongoing maintenance, but the study has found that the increase in rainfall in recent years is weaking the church fabric.
