Tanaiste plans increase in old age pension but must prove it can be funded

Joan Burton will have to prove there's enough money to pay an extra 25 euro to old age pensioners.

The Labour leader says pensions should rise in line with expected annual inflation of 2 per cent.

That would mean raising the weekly payment by 5 euro each year, for the next 5 years, bringing the new total to 257 euro per week.

But journalist Sinead Ryan, who was appointed to the Pensions Council earlier this year, says the Tánaiste will have to explain where she'll find the pension funds
