Taoiseach Criticises Claims of ‘Suspect’ Timing Of Adams Arrest

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams remains in PSNI custody this lunchtime, facing questions over the 1972 murder of Jean McConville.

He was detained last night, in a move that senior Sinn Féin figures have said is politically motivated.

65 year old Louth TD Gerry Adams said last night he was meeting with the PSNI voluntarily, having contacted them last month.

The PSNI says he was arrested after going to the station and was questioned by detectives at the Serious Crime Suite in Antrim.

Mother of 10 Jean McConville became one of 'The Disappeared' after she was abducted and murdered by the IRA in December 1972.

Her son William has welcomed his detention and says the family simply wants justice.

Sinn Fein themselves, however, say the detention is politically motivated.

The party's Finance spokesman is Pearse Doherty.

Fellow Sinn Fein TD Mary Lou McDonald had also expressed a similar view, but Fianna Fáil's Micheál Martin says the comments should be withdrawn as they undermine the PSNI.  Social Protection Minister Joan Burton says she too isn't happy with the Sinn Fein reaction.

But one of the party's local election candidates in Clare, Ballyvaughan's Noeleen Moran who is seeking a seat in the West Clare electoral area later this month, doesn't think it will affect the public vote here.

Enda Kenny says the government in the Republic has "absolutely no connection" with the arrest of Gerry Adams.

He says he hopes Deputy Adams will answer every question he can.
