Teaching Unions to Receive New Junior Cert Proposals

New proposals aimed at solving the junior cert dispute will see exams split in two.

According to the Irish Independent, the confidential document will be put to teaching unions today.

Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan has so far been pushing for students to be graded with a State exam worth 60 percent and 40 percent from ongoing assessment in school.

The executive councils of the TUI and ASTI will meet today to consider this new document, which has been branded an 'honourable settlement' by mediators.

It will see one grade given for the traditional Junior Cert exams, then list separately what students achieved in school.

Mediator Dr Pauric Travers is backing proposals for two school-based assessments – one in second year and another in third year – with results being initially reported by schools.

Mr Travers says that if these proposals are accepted, further discussions will be needed and the introduction of the new Junior Cert Science syllabus – due to come into practice in September – will have to be delayed.
