Gardaí are investigating a fatal crash on the Ennis to Gort road in which an teenager was killed.
Another teen also injured in the collision is in a stable condition at Galway University Hospital.
A section of the N18 remains closed to traffic this morning as a technical examination of the scene takes place.
The single vehicle happened shortly after half eleven last night on a stretch of the old Ennis to Gort road between Lough Cutra and Blackwater – when the car the teens were travelling in hit a wall.
The 18 year old driver – believed to be from the Gort area -was seriously injured in the incident and rushed to University Hospital Galway but pronounced dead a short time later.
His passenger, believed to be from North Clare, also suffered injuries but is in a stable condition at UHG.
The N 18 between Lough Cutra and Blackwater – which is about two kilometres outside Gort – remains closed this morning while a technical examination takes place.
Traffic diversions are expected to be in place up until lunchtime and motorists are being urged, where possible, to take the motorway.
