The Burren is among seven areas across Ireland nominated by the government to be added to the list of world heritage sites.
The Environment Minister has submitted the North Clare site to UNESCO for consideration along with the Céide Fields and Clonmacnoise.
The Western Stone Forts including seven on Aran and a number in Clare and Galway have also been included as is the Historic City of Dublin and the Royal Sites of Ireland.

Minister John Gormley says he’s satisfied the sites he’s put forward meet the UNESCO World Heritage criteria in terms of integrity and authenticity and that the list encapsulates the rich heritage and culture of Ireland.
